Atlanta's cultural landmarks preserve different aspects of the city's public life. In the Auburn Avenue neighbourhood, places associated with Martin Luther King Jr. recall his upbringing and his leadership in the civil rights movement. Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he served alongside his father, was an important base for religious life and the organisation of campaigns for racial equality.
The Fox Theatre represents another chapter in the city's history. Conceived in 1928 as a headquarters for the Shriners, its elaborate design drew inspiration from the Alhambra and the Temple of Karnak. Leased to William Fox, it opened as a theatre on Christmas Day 1929. Threatened with demolition after closing in 1974, it was rescued through the community's Save the Fox campaign and reopened in 1975. It remains a venue for touring theatre, concerts and other public events.
