Бад Кисинген

Bad Kissingen’s spa architecture developed over several generations. The garden commissioned in 1737 was designed by Balthasar Neumann. Under King Ludwig I of Bavaria, Friedrich von Gärtner added the Arkadenbau between 1834 and 1838. A further building campaign in 1911–1913 brought Max Littmann’s Regentenbau, Wandelhalle, Brunnenhalle and Maxbrunnen pavilion into the ensemble.

These buildings remain closely associated with music. The Regentenbau’s halls serve the Kissinger Sommer festival, while the Staatsbad Philharmonie continues the tradition of concerts within the spa setting. Gardens, colonnades and performance rooms belong to the same history of sociability, offering spaces in which visitors could walk, meet and listen. Bad Kissingen is one of the eleven towns included in the Great Spa Towns of Europe, inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2021. Its cultural identity rests as much on this architectural continuity as on the names of celebrated former guests.
