Барбастро

Barbastro's cathedral and wine institutions represent two important strands of the town's heritage. The Cathedral of the Assumption was built between 1517 and 1533 under masters including Juan de Sariñena and Juan de Segura. Its three naves rise to the same height, with slender columns supporting an elaborate network of ribbed vaults. The principal altarpiece combines an alabaster base associated with Damián Forment and his workshop with a wooden upper section made between 1600 and 1602.

The Somontano wine region has a public showcase in the San Julián and Santa Lucía complex. The former nineteenth-century Hospital of San Julián houses the Espacio del Vino and the offices of the wine denomination's regulatory council. The neighbouring former church of Santa Lucía serves as an interpretation centre for the surrounding region.
