Bellinzona's defensive landscape centres on Castelgrande, standing on a rocky height above the Ticino valley. Walls extending from the castle protected the town and controlled passage through the valley. Montebello forms part of the same system, while Sasso Corbaro occupies a separate rocky promontory to the south-east. The three castles, walls and ramparts form a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Teatro Sociale records a later phase of civic ambition. Built to a design by Giacomo Moraglia, it opened in 1847 following a subscription initiative supported by local shareholders and the municipality. Its history includes adaptation for cinema and a prolonged closure before restoration and reopening in 1997. The municipality acquired the theatre in 2012, giving the historic building a continuing place in Bellinzona's public cultural life.
