Cáceres preserves a walled historic centre shaped by Roman, Islamic, Jewish and Christian histories. Its fortifications, including the Bujaco Tower, stand alongside Gothic and Renaissance houses and palaces. Rival noble families played an important role in the city's development from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, leaving fortified residences and towers that still define its urban form. The walls themselves record successive phases of construction and alteration, including significant Almohad work. Recognised by UNESCO, this ensemble is distinguished by the combination of defensive architecture, aristocratic residences and an inherited street pattern. Its appearance reflects accumulated historical change, not the absence of development after the Middle Ages.
