Celle's palace theatre carries a long history of performance, interruption and revival. Built between 1670 and 1675 for Duke Georg Wilhelm and Eléonore, it fell into disuse for decades after the duke's death in 1705. Renovations associated with Caroline Mathilde in 1772 helped shape the auditorium preserved through later restoration. Further closures and wartime uses interrupted its theatrical life before it reopened in 1935. A civic association established in 1950 supported a resident company. The Schlosstheater therefore brings together a surviving courtly setting and a modern producing theatre, with drama, chamber music and work for younger audiences forming parts of its programme.
