Charleston, West Virginia, has a musical presence that reaches far beyond the audience in the room. Mountain Stage began in 1983 and is produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting for distribution through NPR. Recorded before a live audience, it brings different musical traditions into a shared performance format, ranging across folk, roots, country, rock and other genres. Most shows take place at the Culture Center Theatre on the State Capitol grounds in Charleston. The programme gives the city a continuing role in American music broadcasting, allowing a local concert occasion to become an encounter for listeners elsewhere.
