Chorin's former Cistercian monastery brings medieval brick architecture and concert life into the same setting. The community moved from Mariensee to Chorin in 1273, and construction of the church began in the following period. Secularisation in 1542 led to other uses and, eventually, decline; nineteenth-century preservation efforts associated with Karl Friedrich Schinkel helped secure its future. The Choriner Musiksommer added a new chapter on 23 May 1964, when its first concert was held for employees of the forestry institute then responsible for the ruins. The monastery's architectural survival has since provided the setting for an enduring summer musical tradition.
