Cieszyn's Adam Mickiewicz Theatre places a Central European theatrical tradition within the town's streets. Built in 1908–1910 to designs by the Viennese partnership Fellner and Helmer, it contains an elaborately decorated auditorium, an orchestra pit and a revolving stage. The site had previously held a parish church, destroyed by fire in 1789, and later military barracks. Named after Mickiewicz following the Second World War, the theatre receives visiting artists as well as locally organised events. Drama, opera, operetta, ballet, recitals and concerts give the building a range of uses beyond a single genre or resident company.
