Ciudad Real's monuments preserve different stages of an urban history on the plains of La Mancha. The Puerta de Toledo, dated to 1328, marks the route that once connected Toledo and Seville. In the centre, the Plaza Mayor and Casa del Arco provide a civic setting, while the cathedral of Santa María del Prado and the churches of San Pedro and Santiago preserve a substantial religious heritage. The city's museums extend this account through archaeology and painting, including the La Merced collection and the work represented at the López-Villaseñor museum. Together, these places give the city a cultural geography of gates, squares, churches and collections.
