Euskirchen keeps a factory where time stopped mid-shift. The Tuchfabrik Müller, a complete cloth mill on the town's edge, closed in 1961 with everything left in place — machines threaded, patterns on the tables, the steam engine oiled — and reopened decades later as one of the Rhineland's most haunting industrial museums: the LVR runs the looms for visitors, and the woollen century of Euskirchen's prosperity — dozens of mills once fulled and spun here — breathes again to order. It is among Europe's most authentic industrial time capsules, a working requiem for king cloth.

The town behind the museum is the Eifel's northern market gate: medieval wall fragments and towers ring a busy commercial centre, the churches of St Martin and the Kapuziner quarter keep the older accents, and the district administration, courts and garrison history mark its role as the region's service capital. The 2021 flood of the Erft struck the district hard; repair and prevention have joined the civic agenda with Rhineland doggedness.

At the door begins the reward: the Eifel National Park's beech wilderness and the Steinbach and Madbach reservoirs lie south, Bad Münstereifel's walled prettiness a few minutes upstream, and the lowland toward Cologne fills with sugar beet and cycling levees. Cloth in the museum, commerce in the streets, wilderness on the horizon: Euskirchen trades honestly between plain and highland.
