Ferrol is the Enlightenment drawn as a naval base. In the eighteenth century the Bourbons made the deep Galician ría their Atlantic arsenal and built beside it a rationalist new town — the Magdalena quarter, a perfect grid of parallel streets with matching squares at either end, glazed white galleries in disciplined rows: military urbanism of the Age of Reason, now protected as a historic ensemble and unique in Spain. The shipyards have never stopped — from the wooden walls of the armada to Navantia's present hulls, Ferrol launches the fleet, and the Exponav shipbuilding museum in the old arsenal tells three centuries of the craft, castle of San Felipe still guarding the ría's throat against enemies long since turned tourists.
The town's Holy Week is Galicia's most solemn spectacle — declared of International Tourist Interest, its cofradías filling the grid with hooded processions and drum — and its stage is documented in the concert record: the Teatro Jofre, the elegant 1892 house on the arsenal's doorstep, eclectic outside and red-velvet within, where opera, zarzuela and the touring seasons have played to naval and civilian Ferrol alike for over a century. Meninas painted on Canido's walls add a modern quarter of street art. A grid for reason, a yard for ships, a stage at the gate: Ferrol keeps formation handsomely.
