Leer pours the nation's tea and mans a surprising share of its merchant fleet. The East Frisian harbour town is the historic seat of the great tea dynasties — Bünting foremost, trading here since 1806 — whose blends define the region's famous ceremony of cloud-of-cream and rock-sugar; the Bünting tea museum steeps visitors in the culture, and the town drinks its title of East Frisia's tea capital several cups deep, daily.
The harbour explains everything: Leer's museum quay of traditional ships fronts a working maritime economy in which the town ranks among Germany's foremost shipowning centres — dozens of shipping companies managing vessels on every ocean from offices behind the gabled facades, a global fleet run from a town of church towers. Around the old harbour, the Altstadt is one of the northwest's finest: Dutch-influenced Renaissance and Baroque gables along Rathausstraße, the splendid neo-Renaissance town hall, the Waage weigh-house, and the twin castles of Philippsburg and Evenburg — the latter's moated park a beloved stroll.
Custom crowns the calendar: the Gallimarkt, chartered in 1508, remains East Frisia's biggest folk festival each October, when the cattle-market centuries return as funfair. Around town, the Leda and Ems wind through fenland toward the sea, cycle routes running the dikes. Tea in the cup, ships on the books, gables in the water: Leer trades quietly with the whole world.
