Montagnana raised two of the century's great tenors in the same year — inside Europe's most perfect walls. The medieval ring is the marvel first: nearly two kilometres of intact brick curtain with twenty-four towers and mighty gate-castles, rising sheer from green moats-turned-meadows, the Veneto's supreme surviving fortification and one of Europe's finest anywhere; within, the calm little city arranges its arcades and its Duomo — a Veronese altarpiece inside — as if unaware of the astonishment outside.
Then the voices: in 1885 Montagnana gave the world both Aureliano Pertile, Toscanini's chosen tenor at La Scala, and Giovanni Martinelli, three decades a pillar of the Metropolitan Opera — two supreme tenors, one small walled town, one birth year, a coincidence opera history treasures. The city sings their memory in its very venues: the Arena Martinelli-Pertile stages the open-air seasons under the walls, concerts and opera returning the names to the evening air, while memorial rooms and the annual celebrations keep the double legacy current.
At the San Zeno gate stands a Renaissance grace note: Palladio's Villa Pisani, the master's early work greeting arrivals from Padua. The plain around contributes its sweet prosciutto Veneto and the Euganean Hills' wine horizon. Walls without equal, tenors without explanation: Montagnana is the Veneto's best-kept crescendo.
