Mülheim-Kärlich built a nuclear power station that history switched off almost immediately. The twin town on the Rhine's Neuwied basin hosted the Rhineland-Palatinate's only nuclear plant — completed in the 1980s, it fed the grid for barely a year before the courts halted it over licensing flaws in seismic assessment; decades of legal aftermath ended in demolition, the cooling tower's rim nibbled away by machines until its spectacular 2019 collapse. Few places embody Germany's nuclear chapter so completely: colossal investment, juridical conscience, and a skyline returned to the fruit trees.
The ground itself was always the deeper asset: the Kärlich clay pit is a site of European scientific rank, its deep Pleistocene layers — volcanic ash bands from the Eifel among them — preserving hundreds of thousands of years of climate, fauna and early human traces, a geological archive quarried first for the region's ceramic industry, which still values the local clays.
Daily life is cheerfully commercial: the town's retail mile serves the whole Koblenz basin, orchards and vegetable fields fill the fertile basin soil, and the old village cores of Mülheim and Kärlich keep their churches and courtyards against the bustle. The Eifel's Maifeld begins behind town toward Maria Laach's abbey lake. A reactor undone by law, an archive written in clay, commerce on the plain: Mülheim-Kärlich's strata run deeper than its skyline ever did.
