Murcia eats its orchard and parades its sculptor. The huerta — the irrigated garden the Moors engineered along the Segura, a thousand years of channels and norias still watering Europe's vegetable patch — surrounds and defines the city: the Bando de la Huerta each spring dresses all Murcia in peasant costume for a day of gastronomic patriotism, and the zarangollo and marineras on every bar top descend straight from the acequias. The cathedral answers with stone theatre — a Baroque facade like a swirling altarpiece and a bell tower climbed by ramps, the city's proud vertical — while inside the Salzillo museum waits Holy Week's treasure: Francisco Salzillo's eighteenth-century processional sculptures, the finest of their art, angels and agonies of painted wood that leave the museum once a year to walk the dawn procession among the nazarenos.
The season closes with self-mockery perfected: the Entierro de la Sardina, the sardine's burial, ends the spring fiestas in a night parade of floats and hurled toys before the fish burns — solemnity's antidote, declared of international interest. The concert record's register of bands, choirs, conservatory and touring seasons plays beneath the tower, with the modern auditorium carrying the symphonic year. An orchard with a cathedral, a sculptor with a procession: Murcia harvests both.
