Ochtendung farms the Maifeld's grain above ancient fire. The large Eifel-edge village sits where the fertile loess plateau — the Maifeld, granary of the region since Roman villas dotted it — meets the volcanic East Eifel: basalt lava flows underlie the fields, and their quarrying wrote the working history, the dark stone leaving for street and harbour works while the pits, in scientific compensation, yielded deep Pleistocene layers that gave researchers rare traces of Ice Age humanity and fauna — the earth here archived far more than harvests.

The village's romantic possession stands in the Nette valley below: the ruin of Wernerseck, the electors of Trier's early-fifteenth-century castle on its rock spur — never completed to full ambition, never destroyed either, its towers and shield wall in picturesque half-survival above the stream, reached by field paths and cherished by walkers as the Maifeld's quiet monument.

Daily life is that of a confident rural centre: the parish church of St Martin over the rooftops, agricultural enterprises and commuter comfort — Koblenz and the A48 minutes away — clubs, kirmes and the Eifel's seasonal rhythm. The neighbourhood supplies the excursions: Maria Laach's abbey and volcano lake, the Nette valley mills, Mayen's slate-and-basalt town.
