Osaka is Japan with its tie loosened. The merchant capital — "the nation's kitchen", provisioning the shogunate — built its character on trade and appetite, and both survive magnificently: Dotonbori's neon canyon of crab signs and running-man billboards is the country's most cheerful streetscape, and the local commandment, kuidaore — "eat yourself bankrupt" — is observed with takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu at all hours. The castle rises from its moats as the city's stern exception; the merchants' true monument is bunraku, the puppet theatre perfected here, whose National Theatre keeps Chikamatsu's tragedies alive in the art's birthplace.
For music, Osaka holds a national first: The Symphony Hall, opened in 1982, was Japan's first hall built exclusively for classical music — the shoebox pioneer whose acoustics set the standard the country's later halls chased — and it is the venue documented in the concert record, home base of the Osaka Philharmonic's tradition and host to the touring world. The Festival Hall and a clutch of orchestras confirm that the merchant city buys its seriousness where it matters. Expo 2025 on its artificial island restated the old confidence: Osaka trades, feeds, laughs at Tokyo's expense — and built Japan's first temple to the symphony, then ate well afterwards.
