Pingtan is China's last stone step toward Taiwan. The main island of this Fujian archipelago — administered under Fuzhou, and listed in the source register under the composite heading "Pingtan/Fuzhou", flagged for the workbook — lies closer to the island of Taiwan than any other point on the mainland, designated a national experimental zone for cross-Straits exchange, it has grown bridges, rail and a new town on what was for centuries a fishing frontier. The old Pingtan survives in its villages of stone houses — squat, thick-walled, roofed with tiles weighted against the gales — now among the most photographed vernacular architecture on the Chinese coast. The island's most famous performance is given by the sea itself: on spring nights the "blue tears" bloom, bioluminescent plankton lighting the surf electric blue, a natural spectacle that has made Pingtan's beaches a pilgrimage. The built stage answered in 2022: the Pingtan International Performing Arts Center at Jinjing Bay — a 1,500-seat grand theatre with a second hall, opened by the China National Opera House and home to the resident spectacle "Pingtan Impression" — the venue documented in the concert record, and a statement that the frontier island intends a cultural life of mainland rank. Stone villages, glowing water, a theatre facing Taiwan: Pingtan is geography turned into repertoire.
