Радомир

Radomir, in the high valley between the Golo Bardo ridge and the Struma's springs, carries a name of medieval pedigree — borne by Bulgarian royalty, including the tsar Gavril Radomir — and a place in modern history out of all proportion to its size. Here, on 27 September 1918, mutinous soldiers returning from the collapsing front proclaimed the short-lived Radomir Republic, Bulgaria's first republican declaration, with the agrarian tribune Rayko Daskalov announcing the end of the monarchy from the town square. The republic lasted days; the tremor it registered — a war-exhausted nation's verdict — echoed for decades.

The town's older layers are agrarian and artisan: a market centre for the surrounding villages, with a strong tradition of ironworking and crafts, watermills along the Struma headwaters, and the monasteries and chapels of the Golo Bardo slopes above. The surrounding region shares the masked winter rituals of the Pernik country — the survakari with their bells and terrifying beauty — among the oldest living folk practices in Europe.

Radomir today is a quiet industrial and commuter town within Sofia's orbit, but its civic institutions keep the flame: the historical museum tells the story of 1918 with local pride, and the chitalishte sustains ensembles, a library and the annual round of festivals. A small town, twice present at the making of Bulgarian history.
