Razgrad stands on the bones of Abritus, the Roman city where history recorded one of the empire's darkest days: in 251 AD, in the marshes nearby, Emperor Decius and his son fell in battle against the Goths — the first Roman emperor to die facing a foreign enemy. The excavated city, with its walls, peristyle house and treasury of golden solidi, is now an archaeological park on the town's edge, an open-air lesson in imperial impermanence.
The Ottoman centuries left Razgrad the Ibrahim Pasha Mosque of 1616, among the largest in the Balkans, its great dome and minaret still defining the skyline beside the Revival-era clock tower and the elegant Varosha quarter of restored nineteenth-century houses. The town is the historic centre of the Ludogorie — the "land of wild forests" — a rolling plateau whose mixed Bulgarian and Turkish heritage flavours everything from music to cuisine. Cuisine above all: Razgrad styles itself the capital of Bulgarian yogurt, celebrating the national elixir each summer with a fair devoted to it — a festival other nations would envy if they had the bacteria.
Musical life carries real weight for a town this size: the Razgrad Philharmonic performs in the Filharmonia Hall, and the chitalishte "Razvitie 1869" — its date a Revival credential — sustains choirs, ensembles and one of the region's oldest cultural continuities.
