Remscheid forged the tools that built everyone else's cities. The "seaport on the mountain", as the Bergisch town styled itself, packed its valleys with drop hammers and grinding shops and sent files, drills, spanners and saws across every ocean — the toolmakers' capital of Germany, its trade so identity-defining that the German Tool Museum holds the civic memory in steel, from medieval forges to precision catalogues, beside the patrician slate-and-shutter houses of the Bergisch style.
The town's great son X-rayed the world: Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was born in the Lennep district in 1845, and the German Röntgen Museum there — in the prettiest slate-hung quarter of town — tells the discovery of 1895 with original apparatus and irresistible clarity, physics' first Nobel laureate honoured where he was christened. (His chair and grave belong to Gießen; the cradle is Remscheid's.)
Between the districts the landscape performs the town's boldest engineering: the Müngstener Brücke, Germany's highest railway bridge, flings its steel arch 107 metres over the Wupper gorge toward Solingen — a Gustave-Eiffel-era masterpiece still carrying trains, with a park of viewpoints beneath. Add the Eschbachtalsperre, Germany's first drinking-water dam, and the pattern is clear: this town solved hard problems in metal. Tools by the crate, rays by genius, an arch across the void — Remscheid's exports all cut, reveal or connect.
