Розенбург

Rosenburg is a village that lives at the feet of its castle — and what a castle: the Rosenburg, rising on a rock spur above the wooded gorge of the Kamp, is one of Austria's great Renaissance residences, its silhouette of towers and gables looking precisely as a castle should. Its glory is the Turnierhof, the vast arcaded jousting yard — the only fully preserved tournament court of its kind — where knights once broke lances and where history now performs daily: the castle maintains a celebrated historic falconry, whose eagles, falcons and kites ride the gorge's thermals in flight demonstrations conducted, as in the sixteenth century, from horseback.

Around this theatrical centrepiece spreads the Kamptal at its wildest — the river looping through forest below, hiking trails threading the valley toward the monasteries and vineyards downstream, the garden town of Horn and the mighty abbey of Altenburg with its Troger frescoes a few minutes away. The village itself, with its inns and riverside meadows, serves the castle the way a frame serves a painting.

Culture arrives with the season: concerts, festivals and open-air performances fill the castle's courtyards and halls each summer, medieval walls proving ideal acoustics for very civilised evenings. Rosenburg is small, but it commands what many cities lack — a single, perfect image: falcons circling a Renaissance tower above a green river.
