Rüsselsheim taught Germany to drive. Adam Opel began here in 1862 with sewing machines, pivoted to bicycles — becoming the world's largest maker — and his sons took the logical next step in 1899: the automobile. Opel's assembly lines introduced American-style mass production to German carmaking, the Opel Laubfrosch and its successors motorising the middle class, and the company's century turned a Main-side fishing town into an industrial city whose fortunes and the marque's have been inseparable ever since — the Altwerk's brick industrial architecture now protected as a monument of the machine age, the modern plants continuing under Stellantis colours.
The city collects its history with unexpected polish: the Festung — the massive Renaissance Main fortress whose casemates survived every war — houses the city museum's excellent telling of craft, industry and migration, while the Opelvillen, the manufacturer family's riverside villas, host a distinguished exhibition programme of modern and contemporary art, industrial patronage matured into public culture.
The Main gives the breathing space: riverside meadows and the Mainvorland's promenade, rowing clubs and beer gardens facing Flörsheim across the water, with Frankfurt's skyline and airport minutes away framing the working horizon. A migrant-built, engine-hearted city — its population drawn from across the world by the lines — with a fortress for memory and villas for art: Rüsselsheim runs on more than petrol.
