San Lorenzo de El Escorial serves the building that ruled half the world. Philip II raised the Real Monasterio de El Escorial in the Guadarrama foothills as everything at once — monastery, palace, basilica, library, school and royal tomb — a granite gridiron (the plan honours St Lawrence's own grill) of stern Herrerian geometry that became the largest Renaissance building on earth and the empire's command post: from these plain rooms the king governed the Americas by paperwork. The frescoed library shelves its great manuscript collection spines-inward; the Pantheon of Kings stacks the monarchs in gilded marble beneath the altar; and the basilica's choir and organs, with the famous escolanía of boy singers, have kept the foundation's musical liturgy since the sixteenth century — the town's oldest concert series, four centuries running. UNESCO listed the ensemble entire.
The town around it — court quarters grown into a genteel sierra resort, with the Silla de Felipe II viewpoint where the king watched his walls rise — holds the modern stage documented in the concert record: the Teatro Auditorio San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the major hall of 2006 whose summer festival brings orchestras and dance to the mountain air. One registry note: the record's separate heading "Escorial" is the same municipality's shorter name — the two entries are merged here, flagged for the workbook. An empire's desk, a grill of granite, boys singing vespers: San Lorenzo keeps the world's quietest throne room.
