Скобелево

Skobelevo is a village with the most fragrant address in Bulgaria. It lies in the very heart of the Rose Valley, in the foothills of the Stara Planina between Kazanlak and Pavel Banya, where the fields of Rosa damascena that gave the world Bulgarian rose oil bloom every May and June. At the entrance to the village stands the reason travellers come: the Damascena Ethnographic Complex, a working rose distillery that opened its gates as a living museum — a modern installation producing the precious oil alongside a gyulapana, an old rose still built as they were made three and a half centuries ago, with an ethnographic collection of village life from the nineteenth century, a rose garden, and a kitchen serving rose jam, rose honey and gyulova rakia beneath views of two mountain ranges at once.

During the rose harvest the complex fills with pickers' songs and the scent of tens of thousands of blossoms boiling down to grams of attar — the alchemy on which the valley's fame has rested since Ottoman times. The archive adds a summer chord: in July 2023 the Pleven Philharmonic performed an ABBA symphonic evening here, pop anthems orchestrated among the roses — proof that the valley's oldest industry and newest audiences share the same open air very happily.
