Спа

Spa is the town that became a common noun. Its iron-rich springs, praised since the sixteenth century, drew Europe's convalescent aristocracy in such numbers that "spa" entered the world's languages as the word for taking the waters — the rarest form of civic immortality. In its eighteenth-century heyday the town was the "Café of Europe": Peter the Great took the cure (a pavilion thanks him), princes gambled between treatments, and the Redoute of 1763 stakes Spa's claim to the world's oldest casino. The Ardennes town still wears the era — pump rooms, the ornate Waux-Hall, galleries for promenading between doses — and in 2021 UNESCO inscribed Spa among the Great Spa Towns of Europe, confirming what the name already said.

The waters still flow (bottled Spa is on half the tables in Benelux), the thermal baths crown the hill, and the forested hills add two louder modern rituals: the Francofolies de Spa, the festival that fills the town with French song each July, and the Formula 1 circuit at neighbouring Francorchamps, the drivers' favourite. The Théâtre de Spa — the venue documented in the concert record — keeps the year-round stage, its summer theatre season a tradition of Belgian standing.

A noun, a casino, a racetrack and a cure: Spa invented wellness three centuries early, and has the architecture to prove it.
