Svishtov holds a founding date in Bulgarian cultural history: 30 January 1856, when the town opened the first chitalishte — the reading-room-cum-theatre-cum-civic-club that became the National Revival's signature invention and remains, three thousand institutions later, the backbone of Bulgarian cultural life. That a Danube port should lead was no accident: Svishtov was then among the busiest Bulgarian river towns, its merchants trading to Vienna and Odessa, its sons studying abroad and returning with books.
The town's most beloved son turned that cosmopolitan wit into literature: Aleko Konstantinov, creator of Bay Ganyo — the immortal, embarrassing, indestructible rose-oil trader who is Bulgarian satire's greatest character — and author of To Chicago and Back. "The Happy One", as Aleko signed himself, founded Bulgarian organised tourism as well; his house-museum preserves, without flinching, the heart pierced by his assassins' bullet in 1897.
History chose Svishtov twice more: in June 1877 the Russian army made its main Danube crossing here, beginning the Liberation war on this bank; and in 1936 the town founded the D. A. Tsenov Academy of Economics, endowed by a local merchant's bequest — a full university of finance that keeps the town young with students. The riverside park, the first-built clock tower and the old churches complete a town that punches far above its weight in Bulgarian memory.
