Тацуно

Tatsuno wrote the song every Japanese person knows by heart. The poet Miki Rofū was born in this castle town on the Ibo river, and his verse "Akatombo" — "Red Dragonfly", set by Yamada Kōsaku — became the nation's most beloved children's song, the melody of nostalgia itself, chimed by town clocks across the country at dusk; in Tatsuno the dragonfly is everywhere, and the city's concert hall bears the song's name — the Tatsuno City Cultural Hall, known as the Akatombo Culture Hall, the venue documented in the concert record, where the town's concerts and ceremonies play under the poet's patronage.

The town earned its "Little Kyoto of Harima" title honestly: samurai lanes and white-walled storehouses below the castle hill, cherry trees over the river, and a craftsman's economy of national rank — Tatsuno is the capital of usukuchi, the pale soy sauce that seasons Kansai's refined cuisine (the local museum explains the alchemy), and of Ibonoito sōmen, the hand-stretched noodles aged in the Ibo valley's winter air. Leather-working rounds out the trades. A soy-scented old town, a castle over the cherries, and a hall named for a children's song: Tatsuno is Japan's gentleness, industrialised — at artisan scale, and in tune.
