Todi is Umbria's model city — praised by planners, sung by a saint. Its fame took a modern turn when urban researchers celebrated it as an ideal sustainable town, and the label stuck because the eye confirms it: the Piazza del Popolo, lifted on Roman cisterns, aligns cathedral and three Gothic civic palaces into one of Italy's most harmonious squares, the medieval commune's constitution written in stone; beneath, the visitable Roman cisterns honeycomb the hill, and the town's three walls — Etruscan, Roman, medieval — ring the descent like growth lines.
The saint is Jacopone da Todi, the thirteenth-century merchant turned radical Franciscan poet whose laude stand at Italian literature's fierce dawn — the Stabat Mater is traditionally attributed to him — and who lies in San Fortunato's crypt above the town he scandalised and sanctified; music returns to him constantly, from chant to the concert settings of his verses.
Below the walls, pilgrims of architecture seek Santa Maria della Consolazione, the domed Renaissance temple of Bramantesque perfection standing alone in the grass — the ideal church for the ideal city. The Todi Festival's late-summer theatre and music, artisan lanes, and the Tiber valley's blue distances complete the composition. A poet in the crypt, geometry in the meadow: Todi balances spirit and plan.
