Uden spent centuries as a loophole — and grew a culture in it. The town lay in the Land van Ravenstein, a small sovereign enclave outside the Dutch Republic's writ, where Catholic worship remained free while the surrounding Generality Lands endured suppression: monasteries, pilgrims and printers slipped across the border, and Uden became a refuge of the old faith. The inheritance survives handsomely — the Birgittine abbey Maria Refugie, founded by sisters fleeing here in 1713, still houses a living community, and its treasures anchor Museum Krona, the region's museum of religious art and contemporary reflection, where monastic silence and modern artists share the cloister.
Around the sanctuary, Uden grew into east Brabant's brisk market town — a broad market square, a shopping function serving the Maashorst countryside, the air base at Volkel lending the skies an occasional roar — with the Maashorst nature reserve's heaths and drifting sands as its green flank. Musical life keeps the register the concert record describes: chamber concerts, choirs, church music and visiting programmes, with the town's theatre carrying the touring circuit, and Brabant's guild and band traditions — processional, brass-borne, sociable — in full local health. A sovereign loophole, a living abbey, a market square: Uden kept the faith, then kept the shop.
