Урбар

Urbar farms the rim of the Rhine's great theatre. The small village sits on the left-bank plateau above the gorge's most famous reach — its fields and orchards running to the very edge where the land drops to the river opposite the Loreley — and its renown is precisely that balcony: the Maria Ruh viewpoint on Urbar's ground (a separate entry in this collection, which the archive should cross-reference) serves the definitive panorama of the siren's rock, restaurant terrace and festival evenings included, making the village's name a byword among Rhine connoisseurs who prefer watching the Loreley to standing on it.

The village itself is upland Rhenish in the plain good sense: a church, farmyards and wine-growing tradition on the sheltered slopes, lanes that empty toward field paths, the RheinBurgenWeg long-distance trail passing the doorsteps on its castle-to-castle march, and the scenic plateau road delivering motorcyclists and cyclists to the viewpoints. St. Goar's Rheinfels ruin and the ferry crossing lie just below; the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Valley designation covers the whole horizon.
