Alexandros Papanastassiou moved in 1924 to found a university in Thessaloniki, and the institution took the name Aristotle University in 1954. Its ceremonial hall, at Egnatia 131 on the central campus, is where inaugurations, honorary doctorates and conferences are held, and the room is let for concerts as well — the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki plays there. Bookings run through the university's own hall office. The university keeps an orchestra of its own, formed in 1999, and the Mandakas chorus, founded in 1953.
