Gustavo Freire Penelas (1885–1948) left Lugo for Madrid, played second violin in the Filarmónica there, taught, and wrote zarzuelas that kept close to Galician material; he died in his native city, of a heart attack, on the day of a concert. The municipal auditorium carries his name. It is Lugo's general-purpose hall — touring opera, orchestral programmes, zarzuela, dance and civic occasions all cross its stage — and inside a provincial capital still ringed by its Roman walls it does the work an opera house does elsewhere.
