Late Romantic in dress, with domed towers in patterned brick, the Szombathely synagogue was built in 1880 to designs by the Vienna-based architect Ludwig Schöne. The building stood empty after the war; in 1975 it was converted into a concert hall and given Bartók's name, and the acoustics that emerged are counted among the best in Hungary. The Savaria Symphony Orchestra rehearses and performs there, and the town's long-established Bartók seminar and festival — which draws young musicians and composers to western Hungary each summer — has its centre in the hall that carries the composer's name.
