The Brașov Opera Orchestra is the resident instrumental ensemble of Opera Brașov. The institution began on 15 November 1953 as the city's Musical Theatre, became the Lyric Theatre in 1996 and adopted the name Opera Brașov in 2001. Within this company, the orchestra supports a programme encompassing opera, operetta, ballet, musicals and performances for children, as well as vocal and instrumental concerts. Its permanent personnel comprise the string, woodwind, brass and percussion sections required for the house's varied stage repertoire. The orchestra belongs to the opera institution, whose history and artistic programme are distinct from those of the Brașov Philharmonic. Opera in Brașov keeps an orchestra of its own, separate from the older philharmonic society across the city — an arrangement that leaves a Transylvanian town of moderate size with two professional ensembles, two audiences and two calendars. These players accompany the house's repertoire of Italian and French opera and of ballet; Verdi's Don Carlos is among the works they have served.
