Bulgarian National Television began its history with a live broadcast from central Sofia on 7 November 1959. The Bulgarian television service officially opened on 26 December that year. Its first regular programme included the ceremony honouring those who had built the Sofia television tower, a festive concert and a film, placing musical performance among the medium's earliest offerings.
