Three buildings of different ages stand joined inside Nitra Castle: a Romanesque chapel from the turn of the twelfth century, an upper Gothic church raised between 1333 and 1355, and a lower church built in 1621–1642, the whole recast in Baroque form to designs by Domenico Martinelli. Dedicated to Saint Emmeram, it is the cathedral of the Nitra diocese and was among the first national cultural monuments declared in Slovakia, in 1961. John Paul II restored its title of basilica in 1998; the stained glass is by Ľudovít Fulla.
