De Spil in Roeselare opened to the public on 13 March 1997. Its multidisciplinary programme brings orchestral and chamber concerts together with theatre, dance, comedy, circus and family events. The centre also develops activity beyond its own halls: De Groote Stooringe is a triennial circus and street-theatre festival using the city's streets and public spaces. In 2021 De Spil joined De Schaduw and De Tuin der Lusten in an outdoor production of Animal Farm involving professional and amateur participants. Its 2021–2022 classical programme included the Belgian National Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, alongside smaller ensembles and recital programmes. Roeselare's municipal arts centre opened in 1997 on the Hippoliet Spilleboutdreef and took its name both from the street and from the idea of a spil, a hub, for the town's cultural life. It works with two rooms: the Schouwburg, seating 844 over stalls and balcony, and the Komedie, a flexible space for 202 with retractable tiers. Some 180 performances a year pass through — theatre, dance, circus, comedy, concerts and touring opera — alongside weekly film and its own festivals.
