Plovdiv's main square took its present shape from 1963, when the buildings along Kapitan Raycho Street were cleared and the ground around the central post office and the Trimontium hotel was opened up. Reconstruction in the 1980s uncovered what lies under it: the forum of Roman Philippopolis, with mosaics, streets and water pipes three and a half metres down. Open-air concerts and civic ceremonies are held on the paving, with the Military Club and Tsar Simeon's Garden alongside.
