Yambol was Dianopolis to the ancients, and the chamber orchestra founded there in 1968 by Nikolay Sultanov took the older name. It has held a professional footing ever since, in a town with no symphony orchestra to fall back on. Its repertoire runs from Corelli, Bach and Handel through the Viennese classics to Shostakovich and Britten, and includes something rarer — operas by Verdi, Puccini, Bizet and Massenet reduced for chamber forces, which is how a small city gets to hear the theatre repertory at all. Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons' has been among its programmes. The orchestra has toured in Greece, Turkey, Hungary, Italy, France and Germany, hosts the Golden Diana festival at home, and was awarded a Crystal Lyre in 2004.
