Opened in 1995 next to the old Kloosterkazerne, the Chassé Theater replaced Breda's Stadsschouwburg Concordia and was designed by Herman Hertzberger, who covered its two fly towers with one undulating roof rather than let them stand over the town skyline. Three auditoria — 1,430, 670 and 240 seats — sit alongside cinema screens and restaurants, and the house counts some 400,000 visitors a year. The programme runs across drama, opera, dance, music, musical, cabaret and film; touring opera has brought Carmina Burana and Carmen here in a single autumn.
