The Boris Georgiev City Art Gallery in Varna grew from a fund established by local artists and donors in January 1944. The permanent gallery opened on 2 July 1950 at 1 Musala Street with thirty works. In 1988 it moved into the reconstructed former boys’ secondary school at 1 Lyuben Karavelov Street, and in 1999 it took the name of the painter Boris Georgiev. Its collections and exhibitions document successive generations of Varna artists, including the experimental community associated with the Vulkan studios.
