Two public bodies stand behind this concert: the Municipality of Athens, the administrative core of a city of some 640,000 within its own limits, and the Greek culture ministry, which oversees both antiquities and the performing arts and carried sport in its title until the portfolios were separated. Their joint programme in June 2023 was a Maria Callas gala, part of the year marking a century since the soprano's birth in New York in December 1923.
