Колизеу душ Рекрейуш – Лисабон

Lisbon’s Coliseu dos Recreios opened on 14 August 1890 as a large popular entertainment venue. Conceived by four entrepreneurs, it became an ambitious example of iron construction in Portugal, with a broad metal dome supplied from Germany. Public subscription helped meet the rising costs, and the building’s façade was designed by Cesare Lanz. The Coliseu cultivated a varied programme and an accessible public identity, presenting opera alongside other forms of spectacle. Its history belongs both to the development of Lisbon’s entertainment culture and to the use of industrial building techniques to create large enclosed spaces for performance.
