Congress Park Hanau opened on 4 October 2003 with a concert by the Staatskapelle Weimar. Its development continued the cultural and civic use of Schlossplatz, where the earlier Stadthalle had hosted performances and public gatherings. In 2000 the city approved a new congress complex while retaining the historic hall, and construction began with the laying of the foundation stone in August 2001. The resulting centre combines the older building with modern spaces, including the Paul Hindemith Hall. Concerts, theatre, conferences and balls share the complex, while commissioned and donated artworks form part of its public interiors.
