Where the Moselle empties into the Rhine, Koblenz ends in a stone spit that has carried the name Deutsches Eck since the Teutonic Order established a house beside it in the thirteenth century. A colossal equestrian monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I was raised there in 1897, brought down by shellfire in 1945, and restored in 1993. The promontory falls within the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, inscribed by UNESCO in 2002. Open-air events use the broad terraces above the water, with the two rivers and the Ehrenbreitstein fortress as backdrop.
