The Dominicuskerk in Amsterdam was built between 1883 and 1893 to designs by Pierre Cuypers, the architect of the Rijksmuseum and of Amsterdam Centraal station. Its neo-Gothic interior includes a broad nave and an organ whose case was also designed by Cuypers. Originally a Roman Catholic parish linked to the Dominican order, the Dominicus developed into an independent church community. Music has played a central role in its liturgy, particularly through the collaboration of the composer Bernard Huijbers and the poet Huub Oosterhuis. The building preserves both its nineteenth-century architecture and a continuing tradition of communal music-making.
