Otterndorf lies in the old land of Hadeln, near the mouth of the Elbe in Lower Saxony, and like many small north German towns it holds its public occasions in a hall belonging to a society rather than to the state. The German Red Cross assembly room serves that purpose: civic gatherings, local celebrations and, from time to time, a visiting ensemble playing Bach to an audience of a few hundred neighbours.
