Elliott Hall of Music at Purdue University grew from President Edward Charles Elliott’s wish for a gathering place large enough to accommodate the university’s expanding ceremonies and cultural programme. Opened in 1940, the West Lafayette auditorium was designed by Walter Scholer with J. André Fouilhoux as consulting architect. Public Works Administration support helped finance the project. With approximately six thousand seats, it can accommodate large theatrical and musical productions as well as university assemblies. Its programme has ranged from opera and ballet to popular concerts, lectures and the Purdue Christmas Show, linking student life with audiences from the surrounding region.
